Calvinist Humour

We are quite bold [predestination], and when looking to engage in romance [providence], our best pick up line is "Honey, your name must be Grace...because you are irresistible."

We believe in irresistible grace, not free will when it comes to salvation [and romance].

  • Covenant Theology   ( 25 Articles )

This is what Spurgeon had to say to his young and aspiring preachers on Covenant Theology:

"The doctrine of the covenant lies at the root of all true theology. It has been said that he who well understands the distinction between the covenant of works and the covenant of grace, is a master of divinity. I am persuaded that most of the mistakes which men make concerning the doctrines of Scripture, are based upon fundamental errors with regard to the covenant of law and of grace. May God grant us now the power to instruct, and you the grace to receive instruction on this vital subject.” He also said If anyone should ask me what I mean by a Calvinist, "I should reply, 'He is one who says, Salvation is of the Lord.'"

Start reading here - inevitably arguments over justification, law, sacraments and eschatology are really arguments about hermeneutics. You have to get the hermeneutics right if you want the exegesis to be useful.

Covenant Theology is paramount to Reformed Theology.

  • Soteriology   ( 6 Articles )

The five solas, particularly justification by faith are paramount to the well being of the Church.  The five points of Calvinism need to be constantly asserted and defended even in the Presbyterian Church against creeping indifference, here are a few resources to assist.

In particular the doctrine of justification must be taught and believed that we are  justification by Christ meritoriously, by faith instrumentally and by works evidentially.

  • Ecclesiology   ( 3 Articles )

Infant baptism in particular has few zealous supporters, it appears many in the Reformed tradition are going soft on the issue and are willing to be ambivalent on covenant baptism. Whilst baptism is a second order issue, none the less, it is worthy of our time to consider why our infants ought to take the covenant sign and seal.

  • Eschatology   ( 13 Articles )

If you have heard of the rapture or the mark of the beast but are unfamiliar with Reformed eschatology it is time to read up. Pan-millennialism (it will all pan out in the end) is amusing but lazy and ultimately unedifying when it comes to thinking about the implications of living between Christ's first and second coming.

  • Charismata   ( 5 Articles )

Almost everyone is a cessationist, we simply draw the line at different places. Almost everyone acknowledges that office of Apostle has ceased. What about Prophet? What about the other charismatic gifts, read on.

  • Women Elders?   ( 3 Articles )

It is now common for women to teach and rule over men in the Church. But is it God's will or simply the Church reinterpreting the Bible in light of the stunning success of feminism and her ugly brother cultural relevancy? The key text is 1 Tim 2, check out the articles on this important debate.

  • Worship   ( 4 Articles )

If the truth be known, there are probably more fights, more vociferous debates about worship than just about any other topic. What shall we sing? (Psalms only?) How shall we sing? (musical instruments?) Here are a few arguments why we sing all types of songs as well as a few articles that critique some aspects of contemporary worship.

  • Assorted Articles   ( 26 Articles )

Here is a collection of helpful articles on various subjects like Lord's day, wine and Aboriginal missions.
